Accidental RP?

SAN plays on an RP server. I have always but always avoided RP servers, partially out of fear and dread that I'll end up listed somewhere like here (ok, I doubt I would be that bad), or more likely, that I'd inadvertantly end up offending someone...

However, I have been told repeatedly that even if you don't RP and just act like a civilised person it should be ok. Now I don't have a) the imagination or b) the lore knowledge to ever really do any form of RP justice and also I guess most of my characters would just end up like me, but with some of my traits exaggerated, but it's interesting how you can fall into these things regardless. Example: I was at the Acution House yesterday morning trying to work out the economy on the server (having re-rolled with zero gold) when I got a polite whisper asking where the Bank was. I floundered a bit (knowing left from right is a struggle for me, nevermind east and west!) but eventually gave some vaguely coherent instruction. Then the pink text flashed up again "Dear lady, would you mind taking me there as my eyesight is poor". Ohkaaaaay. So I turn round to see a poor lost troll standing behind me, crossed my (RL) fingers, took his (WoW) arm and escorted him there. He thanked me, waved and I breathed a sigh of relief behind my monitor. A minute later the text flashed up again, "So sorry to trouble you further but where could I find a mailbox?" We went through the same routine again as I walked him to the mailbox. Now, in all honestly, I was begining to have an 'Ok is this how I'm going to spend my morning? Escorting a troll round Silvermoon? I need to go to work...' moment but he was so polite, charming and clueless (why do trolls bring out my Mommy instinct? That surely is weird and wrong?) However he thanked me for my time again, waved and departed. Then I had a 'oh did I just accidentally RP there?' moment! Anyways, I'm assuming that I did... that said a visually impaired mage is a scary thought - so many off target fireballs....

Other joys of being on a RP realm include: people walking. As daft as that sounds it's really, really noticeable. People on mounts have them set to walk speed. Coming from a normal realm where everyone is zipping along at max speed it's a big change. Also, joy of joys (for me) in newbie belf land there was a level 80, sitting by a fire with his friends. Presumably chilling out and watching the dragonhawks fly around the woods. The guild recruitment adverts are so different too, referencing campaigns and prevailing on the honour of your race/class to join the defence/uprising/etc. And one of the main joys? The lack of crap in the channels although my heart broke a little when I saw the dreaded gearscore being referenced in trade channel...

  1. Being a troll in Silvermoon certainly makes you feel lost - Kum spent some time their last night and felt a odd and green and crooked around all this model-esque belves, with their sneery laughs (mon).

I have to admit, even though I'm no RPer either, I love the atmosphere on RP realms. Yes you still get people "must link achiv"ing on trade but just finding yourself in some corner of the Barrens surrounded by Taurens fighting centaur ... it's wonderful.

  2. Just wait, though, til you're riding round on a big-assed raptor generally looking awesome. And us sneery belves are riding round on psychedelic turkeys... I always assumed that belf mounts were Blizzards little joke: Here, have an elegant and classy character who will ride *drum roll* a turkey...
